O'Brien expects to add QBs this offseason

Head coach Bill O'Brien expects that the quarterback group will see some additions this offseason.

"I'm sure we will have three or four quarterbacks in that quarterback room once that 90-man roster is set," O'Brien said during Tuesday's media session at the Annual League Meeting. "Right now, we have 65 guys that will be there on April 17 and after the draft and possibly other ways of acquiring players on your roster whether it's free agency or draft. We'll have a 90-man roster when that time comes."

Under O'Brien, the Texans will have worked with a different starting quarterback heading into each of his four seasons as head coach. The recent Brock Osweiler trade to Cleveland opens up the starting job again, but O'Brien hopes that changes to the offense will help ease the transition for learning the offense.

"One thing we tried to do this offseason is simplify things, be able to play at a good pace so we're not talking about rocket science with our offense," O'Brien said. "We just need to do a good job of coaching the players that are in our offensive system, they are excited about coming back here and working with us and we're looking forward to working with them. We know we have to improve on offense and we look forward to starting that on April 17 with our players."

Currently, the Texans have two quarterbacks on the roster, Tom Savage and Brandon Weeden. Both started games under O'Brien and have experience in the current system.

"We're excited about those guys," O'Brien said. "It's not easy to play quarterback in this league. Both of those guys have played for us."

Houston will also need at least one rookie quarterback to throw during the rookie minicamp in May. Last year, the Texans signed college free agent and Houston native Chuckie Keeton, who was the primary passer during rookie minicamp.

Players report to NRG Stadium on April 17 for the start of the voluntary nine-week offseason program.
